Credit by Exam

Credit may be allowed by special examination where command of a subject can be demonstrated in place of formal course work.

Registration for August CBE will be open
July 21 - August 25, 2025

August CBE is only offered for the following courses: MATH 1225, 1226, 2204, 2114, 2214, 1014, 1025, 1026,1535, and 3034.
The registration deadline is 3:00pm on August 25, 2025.

The exam fee is $10 per credit hour. The fee will be charged to the student’s account; students will need to pay the fee through the Bursar’s office. The fee will not be charged until the proctor confirms the student took the exam

Credit-By-Exams will be 7:00 - 9:00 pm on Tuesday, August 26, 2025.

Once registered, further instructions regarding the exam dates, times and locations will be emailed to the student’s VT email account no later than noon on August 26, 2025.

Your exam will be graded by the instructor (passing requires 70% or the class average). You should receive your results within 24-48 hours of taking the exam.

You may contact Sadie Powell in 460 McBryde if you have not received your results within 1 week from taking the exam.

To take these exams, you MUST bring

Your student ID as you will not be able to take the exam without it.
A print-out of the registration confirmation email that you received from the department.

August CBE is open July 21 - August 25, 2025 for most courses offered on the Fall 2025 Timetable of Classes.

The deadline for registration is 3:00pm on August 25, 2025.

IMPORTANT:

Only currently enrolled undergraduate students are eligible for special examinations.
Students cannot receive credit by exam if they have previously audited or enrolled in the course at Virginia Tech.
Students cannot receive credit by exam for MATH 1524 or MATH 2534.
University rules prohibit more than one try at Credit-By-Exam for each course, and a student’s total credit by exam cannot exceed 12 credit hours. Violation of this policy will be reported to the honor system.
