In-Person VT ALEKS Placement Testing

Virginia Tech uses ALEKS Placement, Preparation and Learning (PPL) to

  • find the strengths and weaknesses of your mathematical knowledge, 
  • report results to you, and 
  • if necessary, provide you with online learning modules for improving your knowledge to prepare for MATH 1225

 In-Person Testing at Virginia Tech will be offered
January 21-22, 2025


REMOTE TESTING CLOSES ON January 10, 2025

  • Seats in MATH 1225 are subject to availability. You are encouraged to earn eligibility to enroll as soon as you are able to!

  • If you have completed at least one assessment, you can continue using the Learning Module!
  • Please read all of the FAQs before accessing ALEKS.

In-person testing is offered on a walk-in basis, during the hours shown below.

The testing center is open January 21-22, 2025:

  • 4:00 - 8:00pm ET; last check-in is 6:00pm ET

IMPORTANT: Note that if you check in less than three hours before the scheduled closing time, you will have less than three hours to complete your assessment. For example, if you check-in at 6pm on January 21, you will have two hours to complete your assessment; the testing center closes at 8pm on January 21. The last check-in time is two hours prior to the testing center closing time each day.

 

Proceed to the third floor of Lavery Hall and follow signage to Room 320/330.

You MUST bring the following:

  1. Laptop with Lockdown Browser installed. Click here for system requirements.
  2. Power cord for laptop
  3. Photo ID (Hokie Passport, Driver’s License, Passport, or State ID)
  4. Device used for Duo 2-factor authentication
  5. Pencil or pen

We recommend ONLY bringing the items listed above.

  • Scratch paper will be provided (you must use the paper provided).
  • Webcams will not be used for in-person testing.
  • Remember, personal calculators are prohibited!

Yes, you have a maximum of 3 hours to complete a VT ALEKS Placement Assessment once it has begun. There will be a maximum of 25 questions and the average time to complete an assessment is 80 minutes. You cannot stop the assessment and return; the assessment must be completed in one sitting.

MPORTANT: Note that if you check in less than three hours before the scheduled closing time, you will have less than three hours to complete your assessment. For example, if you check-in at 6pm on January 21, you will have two hours to complete your assessment; the testing center closes at 8pm on January 21. The last check-in time is two hours prior to the testing center closing time each day.

A qualifying score satisfies a prerequisite to enroll in the course, but seats in MATH 1225 and General Chemistry are subject to availability.

Note:

  • Seats in MATH 1225 are subject to availability. So, you are encouraged to earn eligibility to enroll as soon as you are able to!
  •  The deadline to access remote testing is 11:59pm ET on Friday, January 10, 2025.
  • Students who have not exhausted all three assessments, have the opportunity to complete assessment(s) through in-person testing at Virginia Tech (see dates shown above). Students who have completed at least one assessment can access the Prep and Learning Module, even while testing is closed. IMPORTANT: Progress in the Prep and Learning Module and ‘Knowledge Checks’ do not qualify as VT ALEKS Placement Assessments and, therefore, cannot be used to earn eligibility to enroll in MATH 1225. 
  • The last day to complete an in-person VT ALEKS Placement Assessment for Spring 2025 is Wednesday, January 22, 2025. The last check-in is 6pm ET on January 22, 2025.
  • Students can take a maximum of THREE (3) VT ALEKS Placement Assessments (within 12 months of registering with ALEKS), regardless of testing modality.

No. All VT students are allowed to complete a maximum of three (3) VT ALEKS Placement assessments, regardless of testing modality. We recommend consulting with your advisor if you have questions about your course selection.

If you need testing accommodations to take the VT ALEKS Placement Assessment, please contact Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD).  SSD and the Mathematics Department will work together with you to determine the best way to meet your accommodation needs.
