Rachel Arnold is a Collegiate Associate Professor of Mathematics and an inducted member of the Virginia Tech Academy of Teaching Excellence. She was the recipient of VT's Alumni Award for Teaching Excellence in 2022. Her research centers on understanding students' mathematical reasoning as they transition to proof-based mathematics.

In 2022, she co-established the NSF-funded "Proofs Project" with her research partner, Andy Norton. Within The Proofs Project, Dr. Arnold designs research-based instruction (RBI) for introductory proofs courses and she provides professional development to instructors of introductory proofs courses around North America who are interested in implementing RBI at their institutions. Notably, she has led two MAA OPEN Math Summer Workshops with members of The Proofs Project. In addition to her national outreach effort, she also implements the findings of her research to design instructional tools for an improved learning experience in VT’s 3000-level mathematics courses.

Dr. Arnold designed and led the professional development program for VT’s mathematics graduate student teachers from 2014-2025. She now serves as an advisory board member for Virginia Tech's Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching, and Learning.
