Dr. Herdman is a Co-founder of the Interdisciplinary Center for Applied Mathematics (ICAM) and severed as the Director of ICAM for  35 years. He has directed the Virginia Tech graduate program in interdisciplinary applied mathematics at the Northern Virginia Campus. He served six years as Vice President for Education for the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM). He has served as a member of the Board of Governors for Mu Alpha Theta (national high School and two year college mathematics honor society), as a member of the Southeastern Universities Research Association (SURA) Board, a member of the Coalition for Academic Scientific Computation (CASC) council, as a member of the UT Battelle Board (Management Contractor for the DOE Oak Ridge National Laboratory), as a member of the Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) Council and as the Chair of the ORAU Board.

Research interests are in modeling, analysis, parameter identification and approximations for systems governed by Volterra and Functional Differential Equations. Research has been funded by the Air Force Research Laboratories (AFRL), the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR), the FBI, NASA, Department of Homeland Security, Department of Energy and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).  He is a member of the NASA Large Space Systems Team that was awarded the 2008 NASA Center Team Award for contributions in the development and testing of inflation deployed, rigidizable space structure and materials. He served as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Integral Equations and Applications.
