Congratulations Spring 2025 Graduates and Award Winners!

The Mathematics Department extends its congratulations to the graduating class of 2025. Fifty-seven (57) undergraduates completed degrees in mathematics this spring, and 19 students completed graduate degrees in mathematics. Several of these students received recognition for their accomplishments as Mathematics students at Virginia Tech. Additionally, six of our students participated in the Layman Prize competition for undergraduate research, with Theodore Li and Bethany Thompson sharing the prize. We are proud of all of our students, all that they have accomplished, and all they will accomplish moving forward. Ut Prosim!

Early on Reading Day, Thursday May 8th, math enthusiasts gathered in the Commons Room to witness the annual Layman Prize Competition for Undergraduate Research in Mathematics organized by the Mathematics Department. Six undergraduate students presented their research.

  • Ryan Bentley (research advisor Dr. Pasha):
Hybrid AB-BA GMRES and LSQR with Unmatched Backprojectors for Massive Scale X-Ray Computerized Tomography
  • Aidan Chadh (research advisor Dr. Rudi):
Autoencoders Applied to Inverse Problem Solution Mappings with Neural Networks
  • Sean Clark (research advisor Dr. Arnold):
Finding Connections Between Learning Obstacles in Introductory Proofs Courses During the Quantification Unit
  • Ethan Crouse (research advisor Dr. Werner):
Solving For Controller Feedback of Dynamical Systems Using Reinforcement Learning
  • Theodore Li (research advisor Dr. Werner):
Subspace identification used to establish dynamics in time-sensitive ICU patient data
  • Bethany Thompson (research advisor Dr. Norton):
Assessment Tasks for Epistemological Obstacles Related to Euler Diagrams

Each participant was given 20 minutes to present their work and answer questions from the panel of judges. The evaluation committee of Professors Farcas, Liu and Wawro had the challenging job of selecting a winner, after hearing six great talks. After deliberating two joint winners of the competition were announced to be Theodore Li advised by Dr. Werner and Bethany Thompson advised by Dr. Norton. Congratulations to both students and their advisors!

We thank all the students and advisors who participated. You can see the complete list of winners posted on our Undergraduate Research page.
