The Mathematics Department announced the 2022 Outstanding Senior Awards with the return of the annual in-person ceremony on May 5th.

The Overall Outstanding Mathematics Senior Award went to Isabel Byrne. Isabel was also the Departmental Nominee for both the Outstanding Senior Award from the College of Science and Outstanding Senior Undergraduate Research Award

Overall Outstanding Senior Isabel Byrne

Isabel will graduate Summa Cum Laude with a B.S. in Mathematics. Viewed as a leader by the students she worked with in an REU last summer, Isabel has submitted one paper for publication and is in the process of writing three other papers based on research done at the REU and at Virginia Tech.

As an officer in Virginia Tech's student chapter of the Association for Women in Mathematics, Isabel played crucial roles in the activities for which the chapter received the 2021 Student Chapter Award for Scientific Excellence. Next year Isabel will be a graduate student in mathematics at the University of Delaware.

It is my great honor to receive this award from our Math Department. I want to thank all people for helping me through college, including my family, friends, and instructors. I am deeply grateful to Dr. Rossi, Dr. Arnold, and Dr. Myungsuk Chung for answering my tons of questions during office hours, giving me valuable advice, and encouraging me to challenge myself in Real Analysis, Advanced Calculus, and Modern Algebra courses. I have built a solid background in mathematics by finishing the math program at Virginia Tech, which provided me with sufficient preparations to study in graduate school. Thanks again, and I wish you all the best in your future endeavors.
