On Thursday, September 12th, the Virginia Tech Chapter of the Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM-VT) hosted their Welcome Reception for undergraduates, graduates, and faculty to learn what AWM-VT is all about. The emphasis in the name is on the "FOR" women and is not "OF" women. Therefore any one who is "FOR" women in mathematics is welcome at all events. The purpose of the AWM is to "encourage women and girls to study and to have active careers in the mathematicals sciences, and to promote equal opportunity and the equal treatment of women and girls in the mathematical sciences."

At the gathering, the new executive team members for the 2019 school year were introduced and highlights of preceding year's accomplishments were showcased. Among the achievements were hosting study sessions for the 1000-2000 level mathematics classes, sponsoring panel discussions on research in mathematics and participating in GobblerFest.  This year will see the association hosting similar events, but also assisting with a new annual workshop for undergraduates, MORE: Mathematics - Opportunities in Research and Education, which takes place October 26-27, 2019, at Virginia Tech.
