The VT Departments of Mathematics and Computer Science hosted the 2025 MathCounts Virginia State Competition. Eighty-one students, their coaches, and their families traveled from across the state to Blacksburg to participate in the event, which was held in Torgersen Hall on Saturday, March 22, 2025. The competition consisted of individual Target and Sprint rounds, as well as Team and CountDown rounds.

Professors Arun Biswas (Math) and Godmar Back (CS) served as lead organizers for the event. The winning team, from Cooper Middle School, consisted of Ian Cheng, Andrew Du, Leo Wang, Landon Yin, and Ethan Zhang. The team is pictured above, along with their coach, Lisa Walsh, and Professor Michel Pleimling, Director of the Academy of Integrated Science, and Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs in the College of Science.

Coach Walsh will coach the Virginia State team at the MathCounts National Competition. This team will consist of the top 4 highest scoring individual students from the state competition:

  1. Ian Cheng (Cooper Middle School, Northern Virginia Chapter)
  2. Steve Cui (H-B Woodlawn Secondary Program, Northern Virginia Chapter)
  3. Andrew Du (Cooper Middle School, Northern Virginia Chapter)
  4. Shawn Bi (Longfellow Middle School, Northern Virginia Chapter)

Several students from the Departments of Mathematics and Computer Science volunteered to make the event a success. These include Math graduate students Ethan Dolin, JC Hartman, Ariel Liu, and Andrew Norton. We appreciate their commitment to Ut Prosim and their support of Virginia's young mathematicians.
