Anayse Miller
- Student Chapter President of the VT-Center for Mathematics of Biosystems
Why did you choose the Mathematics Department at Virginia Tech?
I chose to come to VT for the community! I love all the friends I have made here and I am really thankful for the supportive community we have fostered together.
Congratulations on passing your Master's presentation! Tell us about your research area. What's next for you?
My research is in mathematical biology, specifically population modeling and my advisor is Dr. Lauren Childs. My Master's presentation was on ‘The Influence of Density Dependence in Integral Projection Models’. After completing my Master's, I plan on staying at VT as a Ph.D. student and continuing to work with Dr. Childs on IPMs.
What are some of the ways that you've become involved as a graduate student?
I am currently the AWM Student Chapter Grad Student Representative, the VT-Center for Mathematics of Biosystems Student Chapter President, and a co-organizer of the VT Math Grad Student Seminar.
What is your favorite thing to do around Blacksburg?
My favorite things about Blacksburg is the farmer’s market and the festivals that happen over the summer. I love getting to interact with and support the local community!
What advice do you have for math grad students?
My advice for math grad students is that it is okay, and even encouraged by the professors here, to work together. In my first year, having that collaboration not only helped me do better in my classes, but also allowed me to form community and realize that I wasn’t the only one who was struggling.
